Ubuntu nears the big time.
Did anybody else see Bill Clinton going on about Ubuntu at the Labour Party conference this week?
Very strange.
I wonder if Ubuntu as a political message can help Ubuntu as an OS? I get the feeling that the moment when Ubuntu pops into the mainstream is coming near. There are more than a few good reasons why this is the case:
Windows Vista
This is one turkey that won’t fly, at least not very well. Recent reports suggest that running Vista will require up to 40% more power consumption for your PC, not to mention all the extra resources you will need just to get it up and running. As with all great paradigm shifts, the incumbent technology is most at risk during times of upheaval. Many people are getting sick and tired of Microsoft, and this could provide the opportunity they were looking for to make the jump. At least Ubuntu will run well on your existing kit.
Edgy Eft
The next version of Ubuntu is due for release in the next few weeks, and promises more of the same great quality, stability and functionality that we have come to expect from Ubuntu. It was supposed to feature the new XGL 3d desktop, but I gather that’s been delayed into the next release.
Apple Losing Shine
As I wrote the other day, Apple is starting to look less and less the ‘Hippy Rebel’ it once was, and even Greenpeace are pressuring them to clean up their act. Many Mac Uber Geeks have already moved to Ubuntu, and I think many more will follow in due course.
Media Waking Up
After many years of completely ignoring the free software movement, the mainstream press are finally waking up to what’s going on in the twilight world of Open Source. The fact that Apple and Microsoft have billions of dollars to spend on marketing has kept Linux out of the limelight for years. Not any more.
Thanks to John Mitton for the heads up
