Bad Vista

Hey Folks,
You thought I’d stopped updating my blog didn’t you?
I’ve had such a rollercoaster ride over the last few months that treb0r.net went right out of the window. My friend Josh got killed a couple of weeks ago, and it’s really taken me until now to make some sense of it all.
But I had to write something now that Windows Vista is about to make it’s debut. Vista is the much delayed new operating system from Microsoft, and this time they’re really going to town to make sure they can screw the planet for every last dime. For the first time in the history of computing, Microsoft are going to wrestle ultimate control of people’s computers away from them in such a way that they, and not you, get to control how a computer is used. They have hard wired digital rights management into the heart of the system, and even use an encrypted partition on your hard drive that you do not have access to. They have also hard wired the hilariously named ‘Windows Genuine Advantage’ into the system, which will render your machine useless if they think you’re running pirated software, so if you want it, you’re going to have to pay for it, and it’s not cheap.
The Free Software Foundation has launched badvista.org to monitor the latest dirty tricks coming out of Redmond. I’m going to be writing more on the subject here too. If there was ever a time to wake up to the fact that Microsoft are holding the intellectual tools of the world to ransom, it’s now. Watch this space.
